Artist Studio

2020

Atelier M is located within a former industrial courtyard in Berlin, where an existing structure has been carefully transformed into a contemporary workspace for artists. The project preserves the raw character of the original building while introducing a new spatial clarity suited to creative production. Rather than imposing a fixed program, the architecture provides an open framework that allows different modes of working to coexist. The intervention balances respect for history with a forward-looking approach, creating a space that feels both grounded and adaptable.

The concept is driven by flexibility and spatial neutrality, enabling a wide range of artistic practices to take place within the same environment. Instead of defining strict boundaries, the design establishes a series of open zones that can be reconfigured over time. Light becomes a primary architectural tool, introduced through large openings and overhead skylights to create varied working conditions. The architecture avoids hierarchy, allowing users to appropriate space according to their needs while maintaining a coherent spatial identity.

The interior unfolds as a sequence of interconnected volumes, where double-height spaces and open floor areas encourage fluid movement and visual continuity. Circulation is informal and intuitive, supporting spontaneous interaction between users. Natural light shifts throughout the day, creating changing atmospheres that influence how the space is used. The absence of rigid divisions allows for both focused individual work and collective activities, making the spatial experience dynamic and responsive.

The material palette is intentionally raw and restrained, reflecting the industrial origins of the building. Exposed concrete, steel elements, and reclaimed timber surfaces define the interior character. Existing structural components are preserved wherever possible, while new insertions are clearly articulated yet minimal. Detailing emphasizes precision without drawing attention, allowing materials to express their inherent qualities. This approach results in a tactile environment that feels authentic and durable.

The project embraces adaptive reuse as a core sustainable strategy, significantly reducing the need for new construction materials. Natural ventilation and generous daylight minimize energy consumption, while the flexible layout ensures long-term usability. By preserving the building’s original structure and integrating it into a contemporary context, Atelier M contributes to the cultural continuity of its neighborhood. The design supports a sustainable creative ecosystem within the city.
