Courtyard House
Valencia, Spain
Residential
2020
Courtyard House is conceived as a private residential retreat organized around a central open-air space. Located in Valencia, the project responds to the Mediterranean climate by integrating indoor and outdoor living into a unified spatial experience. The house turns inward, creating a protected environment that balances openness with privacy. By structuring the home around the courtyard, all primary spaces benefit from natural light and ventilation while maintaining a strong visual connection to nature.

The concept is rooted in the reinterpretation of traditional courtyard typologies, adapted to contemporary living. The central courtyard acts as both an organizing element and a climatic regulator, improving airflow and daylight distribution. Spaces are arranged as a continuous loop around this core, allowing for flexible movement and varied perspectives. The architecture dissolves boundaries between interior and exterior, creating a fluid living environment.

The spatial sequence unfolds gradually, revealing the courtyard as the central focal point of the house. Large openings and sliding elements allow rooms to expand outward, merging with the exterior space. Circulation is intuitive and continuous, encouraging movement around the courtyard. Light and shadow shift throughout the day, enriching the atmosphere and creating a dynamic relationship between built and open space.

The material palette emphasizes warmth and durability, combining natural stone, textured plaster, and timber elements. Surfaces are treated with restraint, allowing light to define the character of each space. Detailing is precise yet subtle, ensuring seamless transitions between interior and exterior. The materials reinforce a sense of calm and permanence.
The courtyard strategy enhances passive cooling and natural ventilation, reducing reliance on mechanical systems. Shaded outdoor areas contribute to thermal comfort, while locally sourced materials minimize environmental impact. The project responds to its climate and cultural context, creating a sustainable and timeless residential environment.
