Alpine House K
Zermatt, Switzerland
Private Residence
2026
Set against the dramatic alpine landscape of Zermatt, Alpine House K explores the relationship between permanence and seasonal transformation. The project reinterprets the traditional mountain chalet through a contemporary architectural language, balancing solid mass with carefully framed openings. Positioned on a steep slope, the house anchors itself into the terrain while opening outward toward expansive views of the surrounding peaks. The design emphasizes both shelter and exposure, creating a calm retreat that responds directly to its environment.

The concept is rooted in contrast—between weight and lightness, enclosure and openness, tradition and modernity. A monolithic base constructed from locally sourced stone forms the grounded lower level, while a lighter timber volume rests above. This duality reflects the historical construction methods of the region while introducing a refined, minimal expression. Openings are strategically placed to capture light variations throughout the day, reinforcing a dynamic interior atmosphere that evolves with the alpine climate.

Internally, the house is organized as a sequence of spaces that transition from intimate to expansive. Lower levels accommodate private functions, embedded within the terrain for thermal stability and seclusion. The upper level unfolds into an open living space with panoramic glazing, dissolving the boundary between interior and landscape. Circulation is carefully choreographed through subtle level changes, enhancing spatial depth and creating moments of pause. Natural materials and soft light contribute to a quiet, tactile atmosphere.

Material selection is driven by durability, locality, and sensory quality. Rough-cut stone defines the base, providing thermal mass and visual solidity, while untreated larch cladding allows the upper volume to weather naturally over time. Interior finishes remain restrained, with exposed timber surfaces, polished concrete floors, and custom-built furnishings. Detailing is precise yet understated, emphasizing craftsmanship without excess. The palette evolves with age, allowing the building to integrate further into its alpine context.
The project responds sensitively to its environmental and cultural context. Its compact footprint minimizes site impact, while passive design strategies optimize solar gain and natural ventilation. Deep overhangs and carefully oriented glazing mitigate harsh weather conditions typical of high-altitude settings. Locally sourced materials reduce transportation impact and support regional industries. Alpine House K is conceived as a long-term structure, designed to age gracefully and remain relevant within its landscape for generations.
